Taking liberties with white

AURORA – Anyone who has ever painted their home understands the dilemma of the color white.  Shades such as eggshell, china white, vanilla provide an infinite variety to choose from

Three Colorado contemporary artists will demonstrate just how diverse white can be using a variety of materials in the exhibition Carte BlancheMary Jo Marks Aardsma, originally from Chicago, says of her Linen Ephemeral paintings: “I use raw linen over white fabric and remove the vertical or horizontal threads in bands and then apply white and metallic soft pastels and dust into specific sections of the linen which creates a surface glow. When lit, the metallic edges reflect the light in contrast with the soft raw linen.” Aardsma, a minimalist, will also be showing her celebrated delicate and detailed drawn portraits of young falcons and hawks which seem to emerge from the white paper surface.

Lynda Ladwig and Kim Harrell, both established applied artists, will exhibit their collaborative work as well as their individual work.  Although available at the Denver Art Museum shop, their jewelry featuring white on white elements will initially be exclusively available in September at the exhibition. Ladwig’s individual work will feature her porcelain tableware and well known houses with white textured glazes on their porcelain surface.  Harrell will exhibit her expanding minimalist jewelry line with a palette of white from silver to gray in sterling silver, etched steel and rubber.

‘carte blanche’ opens Friday, September 12, with a public reception from 4 – 8 pm, at East End Applied Arts, 1556 Florence Street in Aurora and continues through October 25, 2008. ‘Tea & Talk’, an informal discussion with the three artists, will be held the last Saturday of the exhibition on October 25 from 2-4pm. The opening and the Tea & Talk are free and open to the public. East End Applied Arts is open Thursday through Saturday noon-5.30 pm and by appointment.  You can reach the gallery at 720.203.3575 and info@eastendarts.com or by visiting the website, www.eastendarts.com
